Black mold explained.

What Is Black Mold?

Black mold is a type of fungus that can appear as a black or dark greenish growth. It typically thrives in damp or wet environments such as attics, basements, bathrooms, and kitchens. Exposure to black mold can lead to serious health issues such as respiratory problems, allergies, and skin irritation. If you suspect that you have black mold in your home or business, contact Quality Remediation. Our experienced technicians can identify and safely remove the mold from your property.

While there are many species of mold that can appear black in color, the species that is of most concern is Stachybotrys chartarum if discovered. Mold is very common and can grow on almost any damp surface.

How Common is Mold?

Many types of molds are very common in buildings and homes. Mold is commonly found in places that are constantly damp or once had a large amount of moisture from flooding. It can grow well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products but can also be found growing in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery.  The most common indoor molds are Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus.  The most dangerous is black mold, or Stachybotrys chartarum.

How Mold Gets Into Your Home or Business

Mold can enter your home through various ways such as open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. It can even attach itself to clothing, shoes, and pets can and be carried indoors. When the mold spores that have been carried inside drop on places where there is excessive moisture they are likely to grow. They tend to grow best on wet cellulose materials, such as paper products, cardboard, some ceiling tiles, and wood products, are particularly conducive for the growth of some molds. However, given the right conditions, they can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation materials, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery.

Mold can easily enter your home or business.
Black mold is different from other types of mold.

How is Black Mold Different?

Stachybotrys chartarum is a fungus that is a mycotoxin producer that can cause animal and human mycotoxicosis.  Mycotoxicosis is the effect of the toxin which is often facilitated through many organs, particularly kidney, liver, and lungs, and consequently endocrine and immune system.  Detection of Stachybotrys chartarum is usually by visual inspection and/or air and surface sampling. However, there are some very dark dematiaceous Hyphomycetes which look similar, therefore microscopic examination of the fungus is needed to confirm identification.  Because this fungus is not readily airborne compared to other fungi, air sampling in a contaminated indoor environment may show low levels of spores in the air.

Health Issues

Black mold, especially the species Stachybotrys, can present serious health issues for those exposed to it. Those living in homes or working in buildings with mold may experience coughing, sneezing, and other respiratory issues. In more severe cases, mold exposure can cause fever, fatigue, and difficulty breathing. It is important to note that these symptoms may improve when the person leaves the property. In acute mycotoxicoses, symptoms appear rapidly, and if exposure continues, the final results may be deadly.

In chronic cases it can affect the organs such as liver and kidneys as these are the ones in which mycotoxins are metabolized; however, they may also affect different systems of the body.

Dave was very professional and knowledgeable. We had a mold concern in a corner of a bedroom that we thought may have been external and he let us know that it was internal mold, due to humidity in the room. Dave let us know how we could repair it without it costing us hundreds of dollars. We appreciate his honesty and integrity.
